Say Goodbye to Remotes & Control Your Home with a Smart Device

We’ve all been there before, trying to watch a movie or listen to music and we cannot find the right right remote to operate the audio/video equipment.  It is frustrating to say the least.  Many homes opted to utilize a universal remote to help solve the problem.  But, programming a universal remote is no simple task and is still just one more thing to keep track of.  For that reason, many homes are now opting to use their smart phone, tablet or other device and ditch remotes altogether.

By utilizing your smart phone or tablet to control all electronic equipment and home automation, you eliminate the need for multiple remotes or universal remotes throughout your home.  You can move freely from room to room and only need one device (that you probably have with you anyway) to control your entire home automation system.  We have all heard the saying “there’s an app for that.”  That saying has never been more true than it is today.  There is literally an app for everything you could possibly want to do with your home automation.

There are apps to control your home surveillance systems, home security, home climate control, home lighting, home audio/video, home window treatments, home appliances, and more!  CheatSheet explains what we can expect in the next few years as more and more people top to use smart devices rather than traditional remote controls, “For as long as we can remember, electronic devices were packaged with a compatible remote control to feed our laziness. TVs, stereos, ceiling fans, vehicles, garage doors, and even sometimes light fixtures all come bundled with a wireless remote. But pretty soon, there will be absolutely no reason for them. Why? Because we all carry smartphones in our pockets that can do the same thing, either via an integrated IR sensor, or with an app and a Wi-Fi connection. Imagine carrying all of those remotes in a single device? Talk about convenience! Remotes still have their place, of course, so we’re not proposing that they’re going to vanish into thin air tomorrow. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if manufacturers started advertising free apps to control their devices instead of a remote control. We’re already starting to see smart home technology take off as a wide variety of “dumb” electronics and appliances become “smart” and internet-ready. It’s only a matter of time before remote controls are absolutely unnecessary. And if your TV or appliances can support for voice commands, then you won’t even need to interact with a control interface. All you’ll have to do is talk to the device to get it to do what you want.”  But, just because home automation may literally be right at your fingertips doesn’t mean it is as simple as downloading a few apps.  Consult an experienced and knowledgeable audio/video installer who can assist you in programming your home automation and smart device for ease-of-use and efficiency.
